SR-22 & FR-44 Filing by State (2026)

After a serious driving violation, most states make you file an SR-22 to reinstate your license. Two states use the stricter FR-44, and eight skip the form entirely. Here is the full 50-state (plus D.C.) map.

What is an SR-22 — and what is an FR-44?

An SR-22 is not a policy; it is a certificate your insurer files with the state confirming you carry at least the legally required liability coverage. An FR-44 is the same idea but with much higher limits, required only in Florida and Virginia after DUI-related convictions. Florida's FR-44 requires $100,000 / $300,000 / $50,000 (per person / per accident / property damage) under Florida Statutes 324.023; Virginia's FR-44 requires $100,000 / $200,000 / $50,000 on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 (Virginia DMV). Most filings last three years (Connecticut and North Dakota: one year), and a lapse restarts the clock.
